What is Leadership Coaching?
In the sporting environment, individuals and teams have a coach to support them to achieve their goals by focusing on specific skills and behaviours, to enable them to get fitter, healthier and stronger, to achieve a personal best, win a tournament or competition.
The same can be applied within a business context. Coaching is all about supporting someone to achieve their goals, unlock their potential, maximise their performance and ultimately be the best they can be at work to drive personal and business success.
Coaching provides a confidential, collaborative space for a manager or leader to speak openly about the goals that they are aiming to achieve, the challenges that they may be experiencing and get clarity on the way forward. It’s a collaborative process, that aims to develop leadership skills, improve decision making and tackle issues which may have otherwise get pushed to one side.
Yet for some reason, Leadership Coaching is not seen is the same way as coaching in the sporting world or recognised that if you are leader you have a coach.
Why the Campaign?
Leadership Coaching: A time for change?
Leaders, whether newly promoted or not, have challenges to tackle daily and although they may be part of a wider team, or have a good network, it can feel a lonely and isolating place.
There is a perception that Leadership Coaching is only for people that operate at a senior executive level or who are poor performers, that it is costly and often, it seems to be one of the first things that is stopped when finances are being scrutinised.
I have seen the impact of when leaders don’t receive the support that they need. The team start to feel the strain and slowly communication issues creep in, leading to lower levels of engagement, fractious relationships, silo ways of working, conflict and costly investigations, all effecting business success.
I believe Leadership Coaching can provide the opportunity for issues that would otherwise be left, or perhaps not even come to the surface, to be dealt with, creating a more productive, efficient and stronger working environment, built on core behaviours.
But we need to understand what the current thinking is about Leadership Coaching. To what extent is it happening in businesses, who it is for and what are it’s aims. We can’t do that without real live data. We want to understand the facts as to what is really happening and what managers and leaders really think of Leadership Coaching with the aim of developing stronger, more successful leaders and ultimately drive business and economic success.
That’s where the survey comes in. This is your opportunity to share your thoughts and feedback in complete confidence. Whether you're a business owner, CEO, MD, first line manager, team leader, it doesn't matter. If you lead or manage people, please fill in this questionnaire. You don’t have to provide me with any personal information, unless you want to know the results of the survey.
What will happen next?
The Strength Report: Leadership Coaching
We are going to run the research survey until the middle of July after which we will analyse the results. We will develop a report and a presentation, which we will share with organisations but crucially we can use the data to not only understand what the barriers may be, but start to put steps in place to breakdown those barriers.
